Leather Furniture Care

- Stiffness and surface cracking caused by drying out of natural oils,
- Fibre discoloration as a result of accidental spills or sun exposure,
- Scuffing and tearing usually caused during use.
The following are some simple rules to keep your leather looking and feeling luxurious:
- Try to keep several feet between furniture and heat sources,
- Avoid placing your furniture in direct sunlight. Most material will fade overtime when placed in sunlight, but some leather, like anni line dyed leather are more sensitive to sunlight, compared to bycast leathers which are less sensitive to sunlight,
- On bycast leather use a damp soft cloth to remove soil, oils and perspiration,
- Apply leather protection cream to non-bycast leather as recommended by the manufacturer.
Wood Furniture Care
Part of wood furnitures beauty is the imperfections. Knots, mineral deposits, wormholes, unusual grain patterns, other natural caused and man made effects help to give furniture its charm. Such anomalies are considered essential in the look of country style furniture. Moderate to serious damate to furniture will require professional help.
Additional tips on Wood Care are:
- Keep furniture away from heating and air conditioning sources to prevent loss of moisture in wood. If you have in-floor or ceiling radiant heat you will need to have a humidifier to counteract the wicking of moisture from the wood. In-home humidifiers are essential in climates that are noted for their dryness. Solid wood will expand and contract due to humidity conditions in the home. The extent of gapping will vary as the humidity conditions change,
- To prevent gouging and scratching use felt backing on lamps and other accessories,
- Always use place mats under plates, hot pads under service dishes, and coasters under hot or cold drinks,
- Do not set synthetics, rubber, or plastics directly on wood finishes, they may contain chemicals which can alter the finish,
- Do not place newspapers and magazines on wood surfaces, the ink will bleed into the finish,
- Do not place furniture in direct sunlight, this will cause bleaching, twisting, and warping. Knots in pine furniture, with a white finish, will turn yellow, placement in sunlight will hasten this process.
